What currently happens to black bin waste?
After collection, black bin waste is shredded. Metals are extracted with magnets but everything else is compacted. A small amount goes to landfill but everything else goes to incinerators to is burnt, creating bottom ash and toxic fly ash.
This mean that ALL recyclable materials, mostly plastics, are lost and add to the toxic emissions and CO2 output. It is understood that a tonne of waste will create MORE than a tonne of CO2! This shows how energy rich waste is. What a waste to burn it! |
SOLUTION 1: Build biodigestors not incinerators
Here in Northwich we have the Orstead Renescience biodigestor , a world first full-scale bio plant, it has employed up to 150 local people in its construction and will create approx. 25 full-time jobs once it's operational. Creates valuable resources during the process including Bioliquid used in the Renescience process to create biogas production for electricity production. Metals and other high-grade plastics are also cleaned by the enzymes that break down organic waste and can be recycled. This pilot scheme is now being scaled up to full size.

SOLUTION 2: REDUCE how much waste we produce
REFUSE, REDUCE and REUSE are far better for the planet, than RECYCLE, because we save energy, resources and shipping. However, it can be hard to buy things without creating waste..and if this happens please RECYCLE it!
New technologies are making it possible for us to recycle all types of materials.
A lot of people are not aware of this and still put valuable resources such as plastic into their black household bin.
The CWAC website says that at present we dispose of 69,000 tonnes of waste each year, but that 74% of this could be recycled
which leaves only 26% unrecyclable waste.
